I was shooting Sailing all over the world, but I could not even imagine I will be an official photographer for the International Indian Regatta. The event was held in Chennai South of India. There were 150 sailors on water from 10 countries. The biggest fleet was Optimists. Im still impresses how they were not afraid to sail in such waves and strong wind. Especially the kids, that have never sailed in open water before. Apart of Opti class there were 420th, 29er and Laser on one corse.
It was quite a task to come to the sailing aria, as for foreigner you need special permission to enter Navy aria. And the biggest worry for me was to loose my “Multipass”. But i should have been worried about something more dangerous.
The first time during my sailing photographer career I almost lost all equipment! We were standing still on the media rubber boat, video crew was shooting and I was just about to change the lans and suddenly the big wave came and completely covered us. I had one second to lift an open bag with all the equipment. But everything got wet! Video crew had to go back on shore, as their camera stopped working. My Mark IV was 3 days old that day and I almost fainted to see water on sensor. But it looked like it was working. Mark III and 70-200 mm were gone. I continued the shoot with only one camera, 24 -70mm and extender. Later on all the equipment went to service. This is the risk you are taking every day as sailing photographer )))
Here are some photos from the event.
